What is a product directive?

A directive is a legal act of the Eu. They require member states to achieve a specific result, but do not spell out how to achieve it.
 
Product directives are the basic requirements, performance levels and standards that a product must meet.
 
For construction products, basic requirements, performance levels and test requirements are listed in harmonized European Standards (hEN) and European Technical Assessment (ETA).
